Weeks have passed since the last installment here at “The Carrier’s Corner”, but within that time a lot has changed within the freight world.  Numerous acts have been brought to Congress all with the efforts to make our roads safer for all, from stricter regulations on tires on freight trucks to the allotted time for drivers to go on one given drive.

The “How To’s” of Shipping

Good afternoon ladies and gentleman I hope you are having an absolutely fabulous week thus far.  Today, we are going to start to explore the topics of “How to’s” when it comes to freight and shipping.

Regardless of the item you are looking to ship it MUST be packaged prior to being picked up by a freight carrier.  The three packaging options in freight shipping are for the item(s) to be boxed, crated, or palletized.  Boxes can be found at multiple different home improvement stores such as Home Depot, Lowes, and U-Haul.  Crates are usually provided by the companies who are shipping the items, but make shift crates are very easily made.  One of the most common make-shift crates is what it called ‘frankenstein packaging’.  This is just a standard pallet, which is 40’ x 48’ x __’ with 2’ x 4’s placed on each side of a pallet and then across the top.  This will assure that the item being shipped will not be accessible to other items on the freight truck as well as not be stacked upon.  Finally, the best place to find a pallet is in the back of the aforementioned Home Depot, Lowes, as well as at Wal-Marts and most grocery stores for little or no cost at all.
